Guided by a knowledge keeper, Sweetgrass Warrior, Crystal Kids have been able to learn more about their Cree culture through experiences outside of the city, and at the centre. This past summer, the older girls at Crystal Kids went to Alexander First Nation for a Sweat. At Crystal Kids, we have events for cultural activities such as rattle-making, ribbon-skirt making and beading. It’s a special way to learn cultural skills right in your neighbourhood. Cree Class

In partnership with Creating Hope Society, Crystal Kids are welcome to learn Nēhiyawēwin (Plains Cree) through Creating Hope Society’s Oskayak (Youth Wanting to Know Cree) program. Experienced Cree language teachers come in every Monday with youth-focused activities such as card-making, beading and games to help the youth learn their language. Many of the children have some knowledge of Cree from their families or schools, and have enjoyed learning more words and phrases to take home and talk to their families and friends with. Through the medium of Cree, children learn kinship titles, animal names, commands, and all sorts of other relevant topics. The program is accessibly designed and holds space for young learners of all ability levels. Creating Hope Society offers incredible learning experiences outside of Cree Class that are open to Crystal Kids, including bringing in speakers and storytellers, and attending culture camps.
